The Dallas Cowboys have chosen not to extend Dak Prescott and Mike Florio suspects there is a tactical reason behind this.
Bill Belichick is said to favor a return to coaching but only under Jerry Jones.
Current head coach Mike McCarthy has just one year outstanding on his deal, anything less than an NFC Championship appearance will be a certain goodbye.
Furthermore, the eight-time Super Bowl winner is now breathing down McCarthy’s neck knowing he will be the front-runner in 2025.
NFL expert speculates Belichick’s possibility could be affecting Jerry Jones
Mike Florio believes this revelation could be affecting Jerry Jones’ thinking behind Dak Prescott’s looming extension.
On Pro Football Talk, the presenter speculated why the Cowboys chose not to rush into any deal with the signal-caller.
Prescott holds the franchise over a barrel and has all the leverage as he enters the final year on a gigantic cap hit ($55 million).
In addition, he cannot be tagged so he will become a free agent and can test the open market.
Prescott can test the open market in 2025 knowing he will paid big
Multiple franchises will be desperate to have an All-Pro quarterback at the helm.
More importantly, the teams will be prepared to pay at the top of the market.
What a star player can get paid is not necessarily what they deserve but what they can get.
Contracts around the NFL can dictate that e.g., Atlanta Falcons unlocking the vault for Kirk Cousins after coming off an ACL tear.
Deals like that prove countless franchises will open the checkbook for a quarterback with a proven track record.
Florio believes Jerry can ‘pitch’ an extension to Prescott with Belichick in the frame
Mike Florio believes the growing chance of Bill Belichick coaching America’s Team has molded the extension mentality.
On Pro Football Talk, the analyst explained: “Next year the pitch will be ‘We’ve got Bill Belichick’. All of this makes it more likely they make a beeline for Belichick to be the coach of the team next year.
“The pitch next year will be, ‘We’ve got the greatest coach of all time, we’ve got a team that is still pretty damn good and we’re gonna polish off the pieces we need’… I think that’s why they are treading water now, even though they claimed they were going to go all in.”
Florio predicts the appointment of Belichick could stop Prescott from hitting the open market and tempt him into a new extension.
Ultimately, the 30-year-old may take a cheaper contract if there is a brilliant chance that a Super Bowl is on the cards.
