Jerry Jones and the front office had made it abundantly clear that the NFL Draft would have to support their depleted roster.
Key player contracts have forced the Cowboys’ hand and they must settle for rookie starters.
Nonetheless, they have made their first excellent choice in a draft which is imperative for the trajectory of the franchise’s season.
Cowboys trade with the Detroit Lions to earn vital pick on Day 2
However, the Cowboys were willing to entertain a trade with the Detroit Lions when on the clock with the 24th pick.
America’s Team was happy to move back to #29 and sacrifice their seven-round pick in 2025.
In compensation, Jerry Jones would receive, in addition to the Lions’ first-round selection, a valuable third-round pick.
Valuable draft capital has been acquired and their search for rookie starters has momentum.
Cowboy Nation would have been pleased to see the team address a paramount issue on the offensive line.
Jerry Jones drafts Tyron Smith’s replacement at #29
‘Ring of Honor’ veteran Tyron Smith left the Cowboys in free agency after a 13-year career troubled with injuries.
The offensive line class of 2024 runs very deep but the front office wasted no time and selected Smith’s successor.
At pick #29, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced the Cowboys had chosen tackle Tyler Guyton out of Oklahoma.
The six-foot-seven tackle will be inserted into the O-Line and will provide much-needed blindside protection for Dak Prescott.
Guyton’s addition means Tyler Smith will start at left guard in 2024
This move also puts to bed the debate of where Tyler Smith would be starting in 2024.
Smith had come off an All-Pro season as the Cowboys starting left guard and said in an interview that he would like continuity.
Dallas granted the sophomore’s request and left him in the position he excelled in last year based on their draft choice.
Yet, there are still multiple holes to fill over the course of the three days.
The franchise has made an excellent start and has gained a valuable pick on Day 2.
